Can You Appreciate The Ingenuity Of Creating A Sundial?

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

When I started studying up on real ancient clocks, I was at first a little bit disappointed. I found out that the first clock was probably the sundial, a design which seemed sort of obvious and inelegant to me. It was years before I could appreciate the ingenuity of creating a sundial. Before the sundial, no one had probably thought about measuring the passage of the sun in the sky. It was something you could estimate by eye, but it was not related to any units of time. Once it was actually being measured with a stake and lines, however, people could start thinking about time as something that can be quantified and divided. It was the start of a whole new paradigm.

Treasures Among Us

Saturday, December 1st, 2007

If one looks around, you can find treasures everywhere.  I've found them in the dumpster, in garage sales, yard sales, estate sales, just about everywhere.  But you've got to know what you're looking for. For instance, my wife was at a garage sale last week and found two Chanel handbags

Holy Moly!  Both of them were in excellent shape and the sellers had no idea what they were.  She picked them both up for $30.  You just never know what's going to show up.  I'd say this was well worth the two hour effort on her part.  You just can't believe what's out there.

The new Ski Jackets

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

A new fabric is available called Outlast that is used for your base and middle layer. It came from NASA and is described as a ‘temperature control’ fabric. It keeps you warm but, unlike other insulation fabrics, it won’t let you get too hot.
Pick your it for your ‘outer layer’ ski jacket or parka, pants, for something stretchable and breathable, water and windproof, durable yet easy to wear. One of the fabric’s to supply all these features is Gore-Tex
